Media Alert for Sunferries Magnetic Island series
The second Sunferries Magnetic Island Race Week series runs from Friday 5th to Tuesday 9th September 2008.
As of today 35 yachts were registered for race week. 11 of these are from outside the region. The trend will over time see visitors out numbering locals five to one. Visiting competitors include New Zealand entrant Wired, a high tech Bakewell-White designed 52 foot yacht.
Interest amongst the Meridien Marinas Airlie Beach Race Week and Audi Hamilton island Race Week fleets suggests that as many as 50 yachts are likely to be sailing in next years series and as such this regatta is rapidly becoming significant on the Australian scene.
Racing will be daily from 10.00am on Saturday 6 to Tuesday 9 September with a series of passage and buoy races in the following four divisions:
Blue on Blue IRC
Peppers Blue on Blue PHS
Mantra One Bright Point Cruising with Spinnaker
Beach House Heath Fitness Cruising non-spinnaker
Races are expected to finish by 4.00pm each afternoon, but media should be aware starting times may be delayed due to insufficient wind.

During the event, a media boat will be available for media representatives wishing to cover the racing. We understand many media will have time critical deadlines. Boats will not go on the water until just before race starts and will bring media off the water within the hour, if needed, though the opportunity is there to follow the whole days racing and parties thereafter.
