Having drawn a bye for the opening day of the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series in Auckland, BMW Oracle Racing's afterguard spent time on the water watching the other teams racing and analysing the nuances of the race area.

The information they gleaned will be put to good use today when BMW Oracle Racing, skippered by Russell Coutts, meets Emirates Team New Zealand, skippered by Dean Barker. This will be their first encounter in America's Cup yachts since 2003 when Coutts steered the Swiss Alinghi team to victory.

This much-anticipated Pool A match is the second on the card and large crowds are expected to gather at Auckland's Viaduct Basin to see the yachts dock-out and then watch the action on the big screens.

Weekend crowds are also expected to gather on the several vantage points around the inner reaches of the Waitemata Harbour where they can watch the racing at close quarters.

The weather forecast is for sunny conditions with 10-15 knot southwesterlies. In the course area, the wind tends to be shifty and variable in strength and tactitions will also have to factor in an outgoing tide running at up to two knots, making for a complex but intriguing scenario.
