South Pacific Teams Sailing Regatta Day two - 8th July 2009.
Kia Orana,
A superb sailing breeze reaching 12 knots from the south arrived on cue for the Day two of the South Pacific Teams Racing Regatta 2009. Boats and crews along with race officers were tested and two round robins totaling forty two races followed by a 'Tri Nations' fleet race went with out a major hitch.
Regatta placings at this stage have the two local teams Aitutaki and Rarotonga tied at five wins each followed by Victoria, New Zealand Girls and, New Zealand Boys also tied at three wins, South Australia 1 has two wins, South Australia 2 has no wins on the board yet.
In line with the organizer's intension that this should be a 'Development Regatta' the teams have arrived with a number of coaches who are pooling their knowhow and making advice available to the sailors. Graeme Sutherland gave an excellent lunch time talk on tactics with an emphasis on smart sailing which was well received by all. Coach boats were in short supply during the practice races so one resourceful coach, Brian Case from Victoria, simply decided to stand, waist deep, on a submerged coral head adjacent to the top mark. There were a few near misses and smiles from sailors who were pretending not to notice him.
Most sailors are attending their first international regatta and having been through local selections along with the practical aspects of traveling off shore to attend will have no barriers should they wish to continue their international sailing careers.
The South East trade winds are expected to reestablish tomorrow which should see reliable breezes from the South-East.
The web cam is proving very popular with many people viewing shots of the action from around the world. We had over 2500 visitors to the web cam on day one,
