Light winds for OK worlds qualifier

Dabchicks Sailing Club was the focus for the OK class over the weekend when 25 travelled to the club for the second qualifier for next years World Championships in Sweden. Alex Scoles was the winner with two first places, ahead of Mike Edwards second, Anthony Rich third.

We were greeted by very light winds and so the racing was postponed for one hour which gave the fleet the opportunity for a first look at the new book, hot off the press, from Robert Deaves celebrating and documenting the history of the International OK dinghy.

Racing eventually got underway in 5 knots of breeze. After rounding the windward mark, much of the fleet overstated the effect of the tide to the wing mark leaving Alex Scoles to take a more direct approach and he pulled ahead. Nick Craig was second with Anthony Rich in third. Mike Edwards managed to steel four places along the final reach to finish fourth.

The second race saw even less wind. Scoles opened up another convincing lead from Robert Deaves while Terry Curtis found some pressure out to the left of the course but misjudged the tide and ended up reaching into the windward mark. The race finished Scoles first followed by Deaves, Edwards, with Curtis getting ahead of Rich along the final run as the wind died completely.

Day 2 saw the fleet head out to the race course early, more in hope than expectation, but the wind failed to materialize and after bobbing around for a few hours racing was abandoned and the fleet got a tow back home.

Final results then saw Alex Scoles take first place ahead of Mike Edwards second, Anthony Rich third and Nick Craig being shown he cannot have things all his own way in a lowly fourth.

Thanks as always to Dabchicks SC for their superb hospitality over the weekend.
