2009 Nautel Laser Masters Worlds - Day One.

Neither rain, nor gale, nor lack of power will stop the 300 athletes from around the world competing at the 2009 Nautel Laser Masters Worlds. Opening ceremonies were postponed last night because of heavy rain and are rescehduled as Welcoming Ceremonies for Tuesday evening.

Then higher than forecast wind gusts overnight knocked out power to the St. Margaret Sailing Club when an event tent blew down and wrapped around a power line. Undaunted, organizers set up an emergency generator early this morning to provide enough power to get the fleets organized and sailors on the water.

The Standard Masters - with 81 participants the largest fleet - are led by Andy Pimental USA ahead of Arnoud Hummel NED and Peter Vesella USA. With two race wins, the former Finn World Champion Wolfgang Gerz is in front of the Standard Grand Masters followed by Mark Bethwaite AUS and Alan Keen RSA.

The leaders in the Radial categories are Richard Bott AUS (Apprentices), Carlos-Eduardo Wanderley BRA (Masters), Rob Koci CAN (Grand Masters) and Michael Kinnear GBR (Great Grand Masters).
