'Close Call Between Tunnicliffe And Perry - Knickerbocker C Day 1' Andrea Watson

Anna Tunnicliffe reports from the first day of competition at the 2009 Knickerbocker Cup.

Today was the first day of racing at the 2009 Knickerbocker Cup at Manhasset Bay YC in New York. We had a great day and finished with a 4-1 record, losing our only race to our USSTAG coach, Dave Perry.

The conditions were light and shifty, which suited our team quite well. All five of us worked very well together on communication and got ourselves into very good situations. It was a very long day with a couple of hours break in the middle of the day whilst we waited for breeze. We did get to come in and hangout in the air conditioning while we waited for it to fill in again.

We had one very close race against Reuben Corbett in race four of the day. We beat them to the windward mark, but made a bad call on our gybe and got rolled. We did a good job holding them out past the layline at the leeward mark and had a bit more speed, and led them into the mark. It was close and exciting and got the heart rates up, despite the light air. It was a great race, and we are looking forward to more good racing tomorrow.

Tomorrow, we will have a bit of a delayed start as we are waiting for the other half of the fleet to finish four more races. The forecast for tomorrow is for a bit more breeze as the hurricane approaches our part of the world. You can follow the race results at the regatta website, click here and I will post a report at the end of the day tomorrow.
