Josh McKenzie-Brown (18) reports from Day 3 of the Sail Melbourne regatta being sailed on Port Philip Bay. Sail Melbourne is the first round in the 2010 ISAF World Cup circuit. Josh is competing in the 2.4Mtr singlehanded class with the objective of representing New Zealand in the 2012 Paralympics at Weymouth.
Today we had 20 - 25 knots and medium sized waves. The wind was coming from the desert, from the north, which was why the sea was not as rough as it has been. The temperature here reached 40 C as well.
My start in Race 1 was very good and after working the right hand side I rounded the top mark in 4th place, right behind the top 3 sailors. Downwind I was fast but Peter Russell managed to get an overlap on me before we rounded the bottom mark. The next upwind I worked hard but didn't really make any gains on him and this continued down the final run. I ended up in 6th.
In Race 2 I had another very good start but I continued too far out the left before tacking over and didn't cross the fleet like I had hoped to. I worked hard downwind to catch up to the sailor ahead but he managed to get in front of me on the final upwind. Another sailor rounded the top mark just in front of me but I was faster than him on the final run and got in front. I ended up 6th again.
Although I got the same result in both races I was right behind the top few sailors throughout the whole of the first race and finished close behind. In the second race there was much more of a separation.
