Josh McKenzie-Brown (18) reports from Day 2 of the Sail Melbourne regatta being sailed on Port Philip Bay. Sail Melbourne is the first round in the 2010 ISAF World Cup circuit. John is competing in the 2.4Mtr singlehanded class with the objective of representing New Zealand in the 2012 Paralympics at Weymouth.
Today was much lighter than yesterday with around 5 knots in the first race and 7-8 knots in the second, with relatively flat seas.
Race 1 was a disaster. I started too far back from the line and struggled up the first beat. The first downwind I gained a little on the people ahead and consolidated this gain on the next upwind but lost it again on the final run to finish way down the back of the fleet.
Race 2 was much more successful. I timed my run to the start wrong so had to lose a little speed before I hit it but overall the start was pretty good. I went out the right hand side with a few very good sailors and it worked out well for me. I rounded the top mark 4th, having been just behind Paralympic Gold medallist Paul Tingley for the whole of the first upwind.
Downwind was not good and I lost a few places because all the pressure was out to the right and I sailed down the left side.
Upwind I worked hard to recover my lost places but lost them again on the final run unfortunately. So overall an average race with some good moments.
Tommorow will be quite different again as it is expected to be around 20 knots with flat water and the temperature will be up to 39 C.
Again I was disappointed with the way I sailed but some valuable lessons which I had forgotten since I last raced a year ago have come back to me so hopefully the next two races will be be better.
