| The International Youth Hobie 16 Challenge to be held off Palm Beach, Sydney Australia in January has been boosted by sponsorship from the Sailing Scene the leading Hobie cat dealer.
The youth "challenge" will be held between Friday the 23rd and Monday 26th January 2009 and will also include an open category. Over 70 sailors representing 10 nations are now registered for this prestigious event with many more expected
The youth "challenge", while targeted at youth teams aged 21 years or under, has been expanded to include an "apprentice" category. An "apprentice" is a youth sailor under 21 sailing with an older sailor up front. The aim is to give youth who may not have lot of experience skippering the opportunity to build these skills while under the supervision of an experienced skipper. The "apprentice" teams will join with the youth teams for the training day and will have the opportunity of continuing through with the main racing, weather permitting
Jason Waterhouse and Michael McCormick, the current Youth Hobie 16 World champions and defending "challenge" champions, will be vying against one another this time around. Jason has teamed up with cousin Lisa to contest the next ISAF Youth Worlds while Michael, now too old for the ISAF event, has moved onto helm his own boat.
