1:52 AM Sat 3 Jan 2009 GMT The International Contender Australian Championships are being sailed at the Royal Freshwater Sailing Club in Perth, Western Australia.
Jono Neate of Victoria and Chris Sutherland of WA lead the event after day 1.
Day 1 was today, the 2nd January. The wind was a lighter and humid seabreeze of 12 - 18 knots with large holes.
Race 1 was won by Victorian Matt Hosie after most of the top five had a chance. Veteran John Cassidy did well banging to the left, while Paul Green lost a big lead in a hole on the run. In the end Matt beat WA veterans John Cassidy and Chris Sutherland, with Jono Neate of Victoria coming fourth.
Race 2 was won by Young Gun Jono Neate with an all the way win banging the left up the first work; he was almost overtaken by Chris Sutherland on the run. The more interesting part of the race was the battle for third, fourth, and fifth places. In the end the order was Jono Neate, Chris Sutherland and Paul Green followed by Matt Hosie.
All five sailors have been in the top 10 at various world's. Chris Sutherland is current Master's World Champion while Jon Cassidy won the masters worlds in 2006.
Saturday's forecast is for a stronger seabreeze.
