International Cadet World championships 2011 are being held at the German seaside town of Kuhlungsborn, on the Baltic Sea, from 27th July to 5th August.
Hobart's Sandy Bay Sailing Club is confident of a large overseas contingent from Europe and South America when it hosts the next world championship on the River Derwent for the International Cadet class in 2012-213.
This follows a highly successful 'Aussie Night' at Kuhlungsborn reports team spokesperson Marija Sasson.
'Jill Abel, Commodore of Sandy Bay Sailing Club made a great presentation and the DVD that the Organising Committee put together was a huge hit, ' Marija said. Jill and Bec Bailey managed to track down probably the only 10 cartons of Fosters beer in Kuhlungsborn, and the rest of the Aussie mums, dads, grandparents and siblings handed out sausages in bread, vegemite on crackers, and salmon and cream cheese on crackers.
'Despite looking all over the town for green and yellow cordial, Bec had to suffice with some yellow and green food colouring, which we mixed in with lemonade and served in Aussie plastic cups that Robin Endersbee bought back in Australia.
'We had the Aussie music blaring but at 9pm were told it had to be turned off as the marina management was concerned about the noise. Our Aussie mums were very disappointed that their dancing music had stopped!
'Many of the Australians mingled with the parents of the other countries to try and convince them to make the journey to Australia next December. We think we have made great progress and truly believe that we will get much higher numbers down to the Southern Hemisphere for the next world championships. I think the Aussie fun, humour and Australian hospitality was certainly infectious last night!!!' Marija added.
Going into the fourth day of competition, after five races, the AUS team is positioned as follows:
8th AUS 5509 - Anton Sasson and Julian Sasson (SYC) - 47 pts
12th AUS 5758 - Jonathan Cooper and Thomas Cooper (SBSC) - 58 pts
23rd AUS 9747 - Ashleigh Dyer and Georgina Hughes (PLYC) - 20 pts
26th AUS 9561 - Oliver Burnell and Sam Abel (SBSC) - 89 pts
33rd AUS 9777 - Cameron Philcox and Cody Groat (LBSC) - 112 pts
35th AUS 9778 - Samantha Bailey and Hannah Chadwick (SBSC) - 113 pts
43rd AUS 9551 - Sean Keen and Oscar Mitton (ASC) - 130 pts
'The forecast for today (Wednesday) - and let's hope we can get in three races that day - is 10-12 knots gusting 14-17 from the east. Thursday is 12 knots dropping to about seven coming from the south. We are all certain our Aussies will bounce back and work their way up the scorecard,' a confident Mariji (mother of the Sasson brothers) reported.
