'APC Max- Now Indian Chief'
Tony Grainger
After APC Max capsized whilst leading this years Brisbane to Gladstone multihull race the boat was purchased by long time multihull skipper - Darren Drew from Sydney.
Previously having had the boat on loan for six months back in late 2006 early 2007, Darren always felt that one day the boat would be in his possession. After the capsize the boat was towed upside down for 100 miles into Hervey Bay. Suffering cosmetic and rig damage the boat has now been repaired to as new and relaunched as Indian Chief in time for this year's main Multihull events including the APC Logistics Lock Crowther Memorial Regatta which will be held over the labour day weekend in October on Pittwater and the National Multihull Championships held on Lake Macquarie in November.
The 'Chief' will be easily recognised on the race course with her new black membrane sails from Dimension Polyant/Sailtech and Ferrari red paint work. Open style race cats are not new to Darren, he is a previous owner of the big yellow Grainger 41 Flat Chat where he and co owner and good mate Gary Martin campaigned the boat extensively along the east coast.
The question is - will Darren take the Chief to next years Gladstone to finish what was not finished this year? I guess we should just wait and see how they settle in together over the next few months.
This years APC Logistics Lock Crowther Memorial Regatta is expecting a crack fleet of around 35 - 40 multihulls which will be a fantastic sight on Sydney's Pittwater over the October long weekend. This year the Regatta includes a Cat 4 offshore lead up race to warm the fleet up. Visit www.royalmotor.com.au/multihullsfor full details on this years APC Logistics LCMR.
