Fisheries Victoria has released a draft Aboriginal Fishing Strategy for public comment. The draft Strategy contains a number of proposals to recognise Aboriginal customary fishing rights, increase Aboriginal participation in fisheries management and improve economic opportunities for Aboriginal people in the fishing industry. We recognise that Aboriginal customary fishing is unique. One of the ways we propose to more formally recognise this difference is to add Aboriginal people who fish for customary purposes to the list of people exempt from the requirement to hold a recreational fishing licence.
