The GP42 Class, World Sailing Management, and Puerto Calero are pleased to announce that the 2009 GP42 Class Global Championship will be held over 13-17 October at the Club de Mar Puerto Calero, Lanzarote.

The event, called the 'GP42 Global Cup Puerto Calero,' will be the culmination of a long and hard-fought season of five events in the Audi MedCup series.

Some of the world's top sailing talent are expected at the event, which consists of one practice and four race days in the ideal sailing conditions off Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.

Puerto Calero is quickly establishing itself as the destination of choice for Grand Prix-level sailing, being the site of the 2008 TP52 Global Championship, the official training base for the Ericsson Racing Team in the Volvo Oecan Race, as well as the venue for two RC44 Tour events.

'We are really happy to organise this championship,' said Daniel Calero, Manager of Club de Mar Puerto Calero and owner of the GP42 Islas Canarias Puerto Calero. 'We have had a GP42 since the very beginning of this class and believe in its future by participating on the GP42 circuits and offering our regatta in Lanzarote year after year. This year the GP42's are a very important element of the AUDI MedCup circuit, which has also been a crucial component for the class and growing its presence. I'm convinced that next year there will be new projects thanks to all this exposure.'

Paolo Massarini, GP42 Class Manager, commented: 'First of all I want to to thank Daniel Calero, his familiy and his team for being part of the GP42 circuit since its beginning. Joining the AUDI MedCup gave us very positive results and current situation of the class is a great success. Daniel grabbed the opportunity the class offered and has done all he could so that the GP42 fleet could be back in Puerto Calero in 2009. I am sure that we will have an outstanding event in Lanzarote. The GP42 Class, Puerto Calero and World Sailing Management will work together in order to develop a successful and unforgettable Global Cup'.

Ignacio Triay, Director of World Sailing Management, was also enthusiastic with the deal reached with the GP42 Class and Puerto Calero: 'I'm convinced the GP42 is the class with the brightest future. It only needed to compete in events that were on a par with its level of international sailing. Thanks to its participation in the AUDI MedCup circuit and the first 'Global Cup,' this class will have great exposure now and into the future. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Calero family for their enthusiasm and unconditional support. Such events are not only possible, but also guaranteed to be successful with their support.'
