5:33 AM Sat 3 Jan 2009 GMT The FFI Worlds 2009 is about to commence in Melbourne. The Worlds, held every two years, is being run from the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, in Williamstown, at the northern end of Port Phillip. With over 115 entries, this promises a tightly contested event. Entries have arrived from the UK, Spain, Ireland, New Zealand and Hong Kong.
The event runs from 3rd January to the 15th.
Commodore Tony Spencer, of the RYCV, will open the proceedings at a function on the 3rd January. Chairman of the Organising Committee, Bruce Taylor, said that he was extremely pleased with the turnout, and looked forward to almost two weeks of competitive racing.
Daily updates will be posted on the FFI 2009 website at www.ffiworlds2009.yachting.org.au/
The first week of racing incorporates the Australian Championships, with the Worlds to follow. Many spots for Australian competitors are still up for grabs in the worlds, so expect a very competitive event.
Visitors are welcome to the RYCV to meet the sailors and view the boats.
