The weather gods have not been kind to the 2009 F18 Worlds and today the race committee was feeling the pressure as six qualifying races were needed to validate the championship for the 171 boat fleet.
Here is the offical report from the F18 Worlds after Good Old Thursday. (Note we are still waiting on the Good Old Results.)
' Tuesday no wind no racing, Wednesday too much wind only two races, Thursday what will come of good old Thurday?
'The morning starts of with next to no wind. First start, Race 5 for the first fleet is on schedule. The second fleet messes up their first start and this brings them into problems. Because they would be in the way of the first fleet arriving at the gate they need to wait.
'The wind drops to four knots. They shorten the course for the first fleet (yellow and white).
'We have an unexpected winner: POL 4, Adam Skomski GER 203 Sach is second and FRA004 Bontemps is third.
'The wind keeps dropping to two knots. The racing committee decides to postpone and sends everyone back to the beach. No sailing, lunch then? Yes!
'After a little hour, a seabreeze arrives and flags go up for green and blue.
'They are called out to the water to sail their Race 5. The White and yellow fleet benefit from their good job this morning and relax in the sun.
'The start and Race 5 run smoothly, with a breeze of 8 8 knots.
Results green and blue:
1. FRA 116 Billy Besson 2. NED 3 Coen De Koning 3. NED 7 Mischa Heemskerk
'As soon as they have started the second fleet is also called out on the water.
'The afternoon provides the best sailing conditions of this World Championship.
'Green and blue are barely finished or they start with Race 6 green and white.
'First fleet is barely gone when the second fleet (blue and yellow) try to start too. But same old story they mess it up. Finally at 16.32 with black flag they are off with an all clear. Wind is now force 3-4. No troubles to signal this afternoon.
