Tasmanian champion Nick Rogers is the leading Australian skipper after two days of competition in the International Dragon pre-worlds regatta being sailed on Melbourne's Port Phillip, holding fourth place overall astern of two Russians and a German.
Sailing Karabos IX, Rogers and his crew, Leigh Behrens and Simon Burrows, from the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, have sailed consistently, following Friday's eighth and a fourth with two fourth places today in the 18 boat fleet.
However, Russian husband and wife, Mikhail Muratov and Olga White, each skippering their own boats, are still equal on points after four of the scheduled eight races.
Muratov, at the helm of Murka 12, has notched up a 2-1-7- 2 score board, while his wife Olga, steering Murka 11, has placed 1-2-3-6 to each total 12 points.
Third overall is German yachtsman Thomas Muller helming the Sydney Dragon, Liquidity. He won both races today, following a 12th and fourth on Friday, to total 18 points.
Karabos IX, skippered by Nick Rogers, is on 18 points, while in fifth place overall is the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron entrant, Baikal, skippered by Wolf Breit, has had a 3-6-9-3 result for 20 points, followed by Wizzardry, skippered by Cruising Yacht Club of Australia member Andrew York, on 23 points from placings of 5-3-6-9.
The regatta, conducted by the Royal Brighton Yacht Club, is a dress rehearsal for the 2011 world championship for the classic International Dragon class to be sailed on the bay next January.
Tasmanian Nick Rogers is aiming at his second world championship in Dragons, preceded by a 10th victory in the Prince Philip Cup Australasian championship to be sailed before the 2011 worlds.
