Nicole and Rob Douglass of Milton NSW, former World, and National Champions (also known as Team Chukkel) successfully defended their NSW State Tasar Title for a record-breaking fourth year running over the Easter weekend, with a near perfect score card.
The excellent fleet of 67 Tasars just squeezed in a series in challenging light and shifty weather conditions at Speers Point on the northern end of Lake Macquarie. Team Chukkel showed their dominance winning every heat apart from one in the three races that were completed, where they came third.
The quality NSW fleet which included current National Champion Shane Guanaria, and several past State, National and World Champs both in Tasars and other classes were joined by competitors with like credentials from all mainland states and territories to make up a high-class 67 boat fleet.
Tasar numbers are in full force across the country, with many keen to race in preparation for the upcoming World Championships in Japan, and the World Masters Games. The Tasar is the double handed class chosen for the World Masters, which will be held in Sydney later this year.
Due to a broken ankle, Nicole spent most of the summer on the sidelines (including the Tasar Nationals), having to make do with observing her favourite sport. 'It was just great to get back out on the water with Dad and pick up where we left off. I wouldn't be where I am in this sport without him. We are just such a great team. I am looking forward to making up for lost time this year in the Tasar and in my Match Racing.'
Nicole is currently also a member of the Australian Sailing Development Squad (ASDS). She will be heading to Europe for June and July with the ASDS Women's Match Racing team for a series of events and training camps.
In November 2008 Women's Match Racing was confirmed as one of the sailing disciplines for the upcoming Olympics in London 2012.
