Bureau of Meteorology
The Bureau of Meteorology advises that Severe Tropical Cyclone Hamish is expected to slow down and weaken during Tuesday.
Winds gusts peaked at 53 knots at Heron Island at 1800 last night and were down to 30 knots at 0800 this morning. At Lady Elliott Island the top gusts were 51 knots at 2100 last night and have now dropped to 28 knots. Further down at Double Island Point winds are in the mid 40's.
Damaging winds are expected to continue to affect the northern part of Fraser Island during the next 24 hours. Damaging winds are not expected to develop about the mainland coast towards Tewantin during the next 24 hours, however they may develop later.
Hamish is forecast to change direction on Wednesday afternoon and move west towards the Queensland coast as a weaker category two cyclone.
Large waves generated by the cyclone may produce elevated sea levels and minor flooding along the foreshore south of Sandy Cape.
