Classic win for Maatsuyker

At Skandia Geelong Week, the Classic Yachts moored in front of Fairnie Park always attract attention, those wandering the foreshore often pausing to admire the traditional timberwork, polished brass and pure classic lines which hark back to a less technological era.

A fleet of 12 fine old yachts competed in a three race series this year, with race one the historic Passage Race from Williamstown.

It is perhaps fitting that a classic yacht fleet continues to feature in an event which celebrates the first official Victorian yacht race, won by Paddy from Cork in 1858; the original trophy won by Paddy remains proudly on display at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club.

As son Jake competed in the relatively new SB3 sports boats division during the Skandia Geelong Week regatta, his father William (Bill) Newman was racing his classic Roberts 31 Maatsuyker.

Soon to depart for her third circumnavigation of Tasmania, Maatsuyker was equally at home on a sheltered bay course.

With a win on handicap in the passage race and a second in race two, Newman was well placed with one day of racing to go.

The final race delivered a second place result for Newman more than good enough to win the Parks Victoria Classic Yacht series in 2009.

Fellow RGYC club member Graham McNie's Scal, a Van deStadt, was second and Corio Vertue, Andy Indrans' circa 1960 Laurent Giles Vertue, won the final race, finishing in third place overall.
