'Darren Drew's Indian Chief (2008 Multihull Nationals) - APC Logistics Lock Crowther Multihull Regatta' Peter Atchison

It all started 14 years ago as recognition of the work that the late Australian pioneer of offshore Multihull design, Lock Crowther did to develop multihulls and the design for over 30 years.

Lock was a local on Pittwater. He sailed and tested many of his design theory's on this beautiful waterway. Many of his designs can still be seen in most ports around the world. He developed designs that covered medium to large size cruisers and some of the best known racing designs of the 70s 80s and early 90s.

For the 14th straight year the Royal Motor Yacht Club - Multihull Division, Broken Bay will host this 3 day event which kicks off with a cat 4 Ocean race from Barrenjoey Head along Sydney's Northern beaches and Central Coast followed by 4 inshore races on Pittwater and Broken Bay on Friday October 2nd.

With the likes of the two Grainger 10 meter lightweight cats, Mad Max and Indian Chief battling it out with the 10 meter Eagan designed tri Voodoo Spirit, and the Barrink 9 tri Lukim Yu taking on the Crowther 41 Quick Step, the pointy end promises to be a high speed drag race with these evenly matched powerful multis. All of these boats are capable of exceeding 25 knots boat speed and sailing on one hull which ads so much to the spectacle of multihull racing.

With the high calibre multis entered this years regatta, it promises some of the most exciting high speed sailing seen in Australia. to support the out and out racers, the mid fleet will be made up of a host of Farrier, Corsair and Grainger designs. Steve Barton's 10 meter cruiser/racer Grainger tri, Big Bird is always well sailed and has shown tremendous boat speed improvement over the past year and will be mixing it up with the lighter weight Farrier's and Corsaier Tris.

There's even a division for the cruisers to join in on the fun. If your a multihull owner and want to join in, take a look at the regatta programme at www.royalmotor.com.au/multihulls
