The certification of Bellingham Marine Australia as a low carbon marina industries business was recognised at a recent Ministerial presentation at the Queensland Parliament.

Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Desley Boyle congratulated the company on becoming the first marina industries company to gain certification under the initiative.

"Bellingham Marine has shown it is prepared to lead the way and show other Australians that we can all contribute to working in a carbon constrained world. Hopefully this attitude will filter down through the marine industry and influence other companies to help preserve Queensland landmarks like the Great Barrier Reef" said Ms Boyle.

The certification is part of the Low Carbon Marina Initiative; a joint venture between the Carbon Reduction Institute (CRI) and the Marina Industries Association of Australia (MIAA). The MIAA has set a goal of a 20% reduction in the operational carbon footprint of Australian Marinas by 2015.

MIAA Executive Officer Mr Colin Bransgrove said the certification of Bellingham Marine is a significant milestone for Australia's marine industry which contributes $4b annually to the Australian economy.1 "MIAA believe Bellingham is the first marina supplies business in the world to participate in such an initiative.

This sends an important message to the marine industry which will be at the front line of those industries affected by global warming. Bellingham has demonstrated it is taking global warming seriously.

Bellingham certification indicates it is now time for others in the industry to 'step up to the plate' and take measurable steps to reduce carbon emissions" Mr Bransgrove said.

The MIAA believe it is important industry take the lead in reducing carbon emissions and not wait for government to set regulatory requirements.
