Neil Pryde sailing B14 European Championship 2009 Championship goes down to the last mark.

The final days conditions were challenging with a force 2 and tricky chop though brilliant sunshine!

Sketch/North Sails (Dave Hayes/Richie Bell) were second overnight but were on a charge. They started well, had good consistent upwind pace and hit hard left before anyone worked out it was the way to go to win the first two races.

This gave Sketch/North Sails a two point lead over UK Champions the Anthill Mob (Tim Harrrison/Jonny Ratcliffe) going into the final race. The Anthill Mob pulled off Sketch/North Sails trick and started well and hit hard left to open a good lead at the windward mark and extend from there. Sketch/North Sails were fifth at the windward mark so the race was on! They calmly chipped away to move up to third at the last windward mark and took a crucial gybe away into more pressure on the last run to take the second place they needed, winning the European Championship in their last move of the event!

There was a similarly close battle going on for third overall. Team Gill (Nick Craig/Toby Lewis) took the place they needed on the last wave of the last run getting inside Dynamic Sails (Chris Bibby/Scott Cunningham) and Seavolution 1 (Mark Barnes/Pete Nicholson) to sneak third overall from Acxiom (Mark Emmett/Allan Stuart).

Leaky Pipes (Gerry Brown/Leaky Fermor) moved up several places overall showing great upwind speed to score a 14, 5, 8.

Long distance travellers Chris Bibby/Scott Cunningham finished on a high with a fifth to make the long trip from Australia worthwhile.

Top French boat were ex Fireball World Champions FRA 739 (Alain Cadre/Francois Cadre) who showed great tactics and will be real contenders with more time in the boat to come 10th overall and also first Alloy rig.

The event was very well run with ten perfect races in a mix of conditions, unbroken sunshine and the fleet are very much looking forward to returning to Carnac for the European and World Championships next July.
