An Australian record fleet of 125 International Optimist Dinghies raced in the Australian Championships hosted by Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club. The National Championship regatta was preceded by an International Clinic conducted by top Optimist Coaches from Singapore, New Zealand and South America.

A six - race warm up regatta - The Presidents Cup was won by Clement Muller from New Caledonia, second Paris Stowell, (Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club - WA) and third Douglas Campbell, (Royal Perth Yacht Club - WA).

The Australian Championship Regatta was sailed in a range of testing conditions, varying from light to moderate variable winds, through to very strong sea breezes. The 90 boat gold fleet comprised of 51 Australian entries and 39 overseas sailors representing Singapore, Norway, New Caledonia, Germany, Great Britain and the United Arab Emirates. The record number of overseas entries substantially boosted the quality of the fleet, providing Australian sailors with a unique opportunity to test their capabilities.

In the Australian Championships Royal Perth Yacht Club sailors Douglas Campbell and Mark Spearman finished first and second. Third was Lloyd Collings from Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat Club - (VIC), fourth was Paris Stowell from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club - (WA) and fifth was James Brewer from Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club - (NSW).

These five sailors will represent Australia at the World Championships to be sailed in Niteroi - Brazil in August.

The Open Championship was won by Clement Muller (New Caledonia), Kimberly Lim (Singapore) 2nd, Andrew Tang (Singapore) 3rd, Douglas Campbell (Australia) 4th and Mark Spearman (Australia) 5th.

34 sailors competed in the Green Fleet, which was won by Tyrone Gowans - (VIC), Jack Blaauw - (WA) 2nd and Carolina Townsend Arellano - (WA) 3rd. The Green Fleet raced a total of 17 races and is regarded the breeding ground for the Optimist Champions of the future.

The International Optimist Dinghy Association Asia Pacific Teams Racing Championship was held on the final day of the Regatta. A round robin series of 28 races saw a hotly contested semi final raced between the two top Singapore teams.

The final was raced between the Australian Worlds Team and Singapore's No. 1 team with Australia winning 2 - Nil. This is a substantial achievement for Australia as Singapore is a top ranked Optimist Teams racing nation.

The Australian Optimist Fleet is growing at approximately 100 boats per year which should guarantee an even bigger regatta in Adelaide in 2010.
