Audi Etchells Worlds - Invitation race update

Melbourne turned on a great day of sailing for the invitation race of the Audi Etchells worlds.

The cloudy grey skies cleared around the scheduled starting time of 2pm to allow a weak sea breeze develop over the SE morning breeze.

The swing to the right as the sea breeze developed and the keenness of the fleet to get away meant a delay resetting the starting line plus two general recalls before the starters brought out the "Black Flag" for the third start meaning any yacht over the starting line in the minute before the start is disqualified - even if they get back behind the starting line in time for the starting signal.

The starters did a good job identifying 13 yachts over the line early which ended with a BFD (Black Flag or disqualified) result on their score card.

With 85 yachts on the start line the line was over 1100m long and split with a committee boat in the middle making it easier to identify the yachts over the line early.

Our team of young match racing skipper Keith Swinton (bow), Olympic gold medallist Tessa Parkinson (strategy & tactics) did a great job getting us up on the start line and around the race track.

Our mainsheet trimmer and Americas Cup bowman Andy Fethers kept the boat in tune and fast and at one stage half way up the windward leg we were leading the fleet as the sea breeze started to fill in from the right side of the course.

Alas - we didn't hit the right side hard enough and went around the first top mark 12th and ended up 13th at the finish.

The race winner Alastair Gair from New Zealand with Jeff Rose second and Damien King third.

A number of the fleet either retired during the race - or some like John Bertrand took the day off and didn't sail to try and stay fresh and focused for the first race starting tomorrow at 1200.
