While Alinghi 5 is been prepared to be airlifted to Genoa on Friday, weather permitting, SNG has announced the venue for the 33rd AC Match.
It was long rumored that Valencia could have been the place as there was a mutual consent for that venue for a match that was planned for May 2009. The last judgment in reference to the venue still mentions that possibility or any other place that SNG would select.
Now the whole discussion that will arise is the interpretation of the 'any other place' mention. It does refer in a way to a place coherent with the Deed of Gift; therefore it cannot be a lake as in Lake Geneva.
But it is also fair that a club can defend the cup in its own hemisphere.
So the SNG has selected one of the United Arab Emirates and it is Ras-Al-Khaimah, roughly 60 miles north-east of Dubai.
It is a light wind selection which is in line with the design parameters of the Swiss catamaran.
Will GGYC go to court yet again on that selection, what will Justice Kornreich decide? Hold your reservation still and watch this space.
The issue of venue is expected to be considered at a Hearing in the New York Supreme Court on 10 August.
Sail-World will also publish a major story on security issues in the proposed regatta venue later tonight, NZT
