America's Cup defenders Alinghi capsize as rain squall hits iShares Cup

On the first day of racing at the iShares Cup 2008, Alinghi capsized in Race 1 as a rain squall swept across Lake Lugano and the winds increased during a thunderstorm

Alinghi, helmed by skipper Ed Baird, capsized in strong winds, the crew were all retrieved safely. Alinghi are competing in the iShares Cup for the first time and are using the event as a training platform for their defence of the 33rd America's Cup in multihulls.

The Crew are . . . with skipper Ed Baird - On the bow Pieter Van Nieuwenhuyzen, mainsheet trimmer Craig Satterthwaite and Italian Lorenzo Mazza also trimming.

The iShares Cup is a five-event racing series across Europe in Extreme 40 catamarans. Nine teams are competing in the first iShares Cup event at Lugano, Switzerland. A total of 18 races are held over 3 days finishing Sunday, 1 June.
