Across the Atlantic in under 6 days! In thick fog, Frenchman Thomas Coville onboard his maxi trimaran Sodeb'O has crossed the Lizard Point finish line after completing his solo crossing of the North Atlantic. His new record stands at 5 days, 19 hours, 29 minutes and 20 seconds.

Coville - .. .
Coville, who listens to Rachmaninov in his spare time, says he loves albatrosses, Marie Curie and eating lobster, has beaten his fellow Frenchman's record for crossing the Atlantic by a whopping eight hours.

Sailors have always seen the crossing - starting from Ambrose Lighthouse, just off New York Harbour, to Lizard Point, just off England's most southerly point- as a challenge. But how far can they go?

Sodeb'O is a very very fast, high-tech 105ft catamaran, and the conditions were ideal for almost all of the journey, except for fog patches. The previous record had been held by Francis Joyon since 2005, so it will be interesting to see how long it takes someone - anyone - to try to beat this record.

The record is still waiting for ratification by the World Sailing Speed Record Council(WSSRC), but that won't stop the champage corks popping!
