The Australian Maritime Safety Authority is urging all owners of 121.5 MHz beacons to dispose of them correctly and ensure that they register their 406 MHz beacons.
The internationally owned satellites that monitored the 121.5 MHz distress beacons have now been switched off and Unwanted beacons can now be disposed of at no cost by placing them in collection bins in any of the Battery World stores around Australia.
Those who have purchased new 406 MHz beacons are asked to register their beacons immediately. This can be done either online or by the phone.
Owners can visit the AMSA website or call 1800 406 406 to register their beacons, with the website the preferred method.
AMSA have developed a video which shows the danger of not disposing of a 121.5 MHz beacon correctly.
