With the support of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Westhaven Marina, a new City fleet of Etchells has been established.
This is an exciting new development for the Etchells Fleet in Auckland, with boats relocating from Gulf Harbour and Bucklands Beach. The huge benefit has been establishing a central location which enables week night racing. This has been made possible by the association engaging a shore crew to launch and retreive the boats.
To be staged throughout the summer, twilight racing started last Tuesday and was very successful. Of the three races sailed, the current National Champion, Alastair Gair and crew won the night.
The 2009 National Championships commence Friday 13th to Sunday 15th November. Interest is high and includes a top Australian crew. Amongst the 13 entries, Alastair Gair and crew will be favoured to win the title. Other favoured crews include Anatole Masfen, Charles St Clair Brown and Gavin Gerrard.
The regatta will be sailed off Westhaven, on the western side of the Harbour Bridge.
