Anna Tunnicliffe, Gus (USA), Olympic Gold Medalist, and Dave Perry, Team Perry (USA), collegiate All-American and two-time Congressional Cup champion and popular author on racing rules are tied for first place, 4-1, after Flight 6 on the first day of racing at the 2009 Knickerbocker Cup.
Keith Swinton, Black Swan Match Racing (AUS) is in third place, 3-2, followed closely by Laurie Jury, Slam Match Kiwi (NZ), 2-3. Winds were fluky all day with a weak north westerly filling in enough to get off three flights. RC postponed midday when the wind died, only to return as a very light southerly filled in, allowing RC to finish the day with six flights completed.
Racing continues on Friday, with good wind predicted for Manhasset Bay, giving the rest of the teams a chance to catch up. All eyes are on Phil Robertson (NZ), who came to the Knickerbocker Cup after winning the Chicago Match Race Cup; Chris Van Tol (USA), winner of the 2007 Knickerbocker Cup; and Taylor Canfield (ISV), all who won their one race today, and are gearing up to take on the rest of the pack. At this point no one can be ruled out and there is still a lot of racing before any one team can be named
Manhasset Bay Yacht Club is the host of this year's Knickerbocker Cup, and boasts a long and impressive history, including the Manhasset Bay Challenge Cup (1902), the oldest yachting trophy competed for annually in the United States; the founding of the very popular Star class by Commodore 'Pop' Corry (1911), and the Manhasset Bay Fall Series, which brings big boat racing to western Long Island Sound.
