Saturday 11 July was the first day of the 2009 Australian School Team Racing Championships with 15 teams from across the country racing on the waters of Waterloo Bay, hosted by Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.

During the first day 48 races were completed with The Hutchins School from Tasmania comfortably winning all six of their races.

Team Captain Elliott Noye who recently won the bronze medal in the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Queensland Youth Week said that he was very proud of his teams efforts on Day 1.

'There was some great racing out there and it was definitely challenging. I have to say that our skills were tested by the other teams, but we pulled through and had a great day,' said Noye just prior to departing for the race course on Day 2.

Sitting in second place with five wins is Guilford / St Virgils College also from Tasmania. Their only loss was to The Hutchins School.

Oliver Nicholas, Team Captain for Guildford / St Virgils College said their main rivals, The Hutchins School was a tough team to beat.

'Our goal for Day 2 is to increase the gap between us and third place, and to beat The Hutchins School of course!' said Nicholas. 'They have three very strong skippers in their team and probably one of the best coaches in the country Murray Jones who knows quite a lot about Team Racing. But I know our team has what it takes to take the top spot.'

Brisbane locals Anglican Church Grammar School is sitting in third place after six races.

Racing for Day 2 is currently underway. The forecast says the breeze will ease considerably at approximately 1430 hours.
