Powerboat P1 World Championship. Lucas Oil Outerlimits pilots Nigel Hook and Joe Sgro are both in good spirits despite sustaining minor injuries in Sunday's Evolution Class Endurance Race.
Neither pilot endured serious injury with Hook suffering facial bruising and a mild concussion whilst Sgro experienced short-term memory loss.
Reflecting on the incident, a cheerful Hook said he felt 'as fit as a twenty-year-old.'
Having returned to the dry-pits to observe the terminal damage to the Lucas Oil Outerlimits hull, Hook said: 'We're both fine - in better shape than the boat anyway - there's a little bit of soreness there.
'The boat is finished. It was the most violent barrel roll I've ever been involved in. The sheer force of the roll caused Joe to jump straight out of his shoe. Unfortunately I broke my 20-year-old Rolex watch but the personal damage stopped there.'
The Lucas Oil Outerlimts' roll cage wrapped inside the canopy saved the duo, according to Sgro. 'It was just the most spectacular crash - I don't know how many other boats could've survived such an impact.
'I lost my memory for about ten minutes. I couldn't remember getting out of the boat or disconnecting my helmet. I turned to Nigel and asked if he was OK and we proceeded to get out.
'By the time I stood up, the boat was going down and was coming down on top of us as I swam away. Credit to the Bergamo Scuba Angels - they were so quick to the scene.'
Only two rounds remain in the Powerboat P1 World Championship 2009 and Hook is determined to give everyone involved in the Lucas Oil Outerlimits team a positive end to the season. He said: 'We're already hunting down another boat for Sicily and will be right up there aiming to finish on a high.'
