Powerboat P1's Marco Pennesi once ignored his huge portion of Christmas Day turkey and all the trimmings in favour of unwrapping his Metamarine hull to feast upon technical improvements to his treasured powerboat.

This year, the San Benedetto del Tronto-based pilot will be taking a few days off, but Pennesi won't be completely shaking off his scrooge-esque image, insisting the Metamarine boatyard 'doesn't have time to mess about' with next season's early start in Croatia, in April.

'We are working really hard on the boat and its engines to improve its reliability. As Silverline showed in 2009, we think it will be the key to championship success next year.

Preparations have so far been stifled due to poor weather hitting Italy's Adriatic coast. Pennesi added: 'It is preventing us from testing the boat. We want to start experimenting new solutions, but we won't be sure they will work until we test it out in suitable conditions.'

Metamarine, like most of the championship's teams, are very cagey about its plans for 2010 with Pennesi refusing to give his rivals an edge.

'The teams don't give any information away as we all intend to get to the first race more prepared and as competitive as each other. The last thing we want is the other teams to be better organised and have a head start.'
