Austrian powerboating legend Hannes Bohinc has admitted he thought the lead established by the mid-way point championship pacesetters would be too great to overcome following the disastrous round in Istanbul in June.
In the absence of Giancarlo Cangiano, a series of technical issues left the #88 SNAV OSG Outerlimits hull in the wet pits on the Bosphorus for both races as they fell 136 points behind then championship leaders #47 Silverline.
'We lost out on 200 points in that race,' recalls the 49-year-old. 'This is a huge amount of points when you consider how the points scoring is calculated. Therefore, we simply had to make up this margain in the final three Grand Prix of the Sea events which was not easy.
'To be honest, it did look like the task might be too tough,' he added.
Bohinc, who split racing duties with the talented Giovanni Carpitella during the season, believes the environment fostered by OSG Racing and the experience of the crew aided the team's ultimately successful quest for the Evolution championship.
'Yes, I have to say we have a great team. I have been racing for 20 years and I think my experience was important too,' explains Bohinc.
'Though to race a petrol boat was a brand new experience for me as I have only raced previously with a diesel.'
Surprisingly, rather than lifting the Evolution-class trophy on the last day of the season, Bohinc identifies a moment halfway through the Powerboat P1 World Championship season as his highlight of the year.
'The highlight was in the middle of the season when we saw how strong we could be and how strong the boat was and how we could establish the perfect set-up.
'As for next year? Let's see. It is now September, then October, then November. We will have another look at the situation in December. Perhaps I will bring my own team if there is a chance the rules to be changed to help diesel boats a little more.'
