As the biennial Marinas conference wrapped up in considerably nicer weather than the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show just days before, the 340 delegates were inspired, challenged and replete with initiatives that will have global impact.
Speaking on the final day of proceedings (Weds 27 May), executive officer of the Marina Industry Association of Australia (MIAA), Colin Bransgrove said organizers were satisfied with the turnout and exhibitors. "We had the same number of delegates as 2007, which when you consider the economic climate, is a success. Our exhibitors were up to 42 from 30 last time, which represents a good increase."
Feedback from those who attended, said Bransgrove, was that the conference was "extremely valuable".
"The quality of speakers and relevance of their topics were particularly popular."
Delegates from 10 countries attended, including the UK, Europe, the US, Asia, NZ and the Middle East.
Marina of the Year was announced during the conference. Fenwicks Marina was awarded Marina of the Year for under 85 berths and in category 2, 85 berths and over, Empire Marinas, Bobbin Head took home the coveted title of Marina of the Year.
60km north of Sydney on the Hawkesbury River, Fenwicks was recognized for its "continual improvements in environmental practices", such as regular water quality testing as part of the Streamwatch Program, as well as its level of support and participation in the local community.
Empire Marinas, Bobbin Head is 24km from Sydney in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, providing easy access to Pittwater, Brisbane Waters and the Hawkesbury River systems. Empire works closely with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service in promoting the natural environment and providing excellent public facilities.
Awards Judge, Tom Chapman said: "This is a first-class marina in a highly sensitive and pristine national park environment. The marina infrastructure has been developed with the highest level of consideration for and integration with the natural environment".
Award of Excellence Finalist went to d'Albora Marinas Victoria Harbour and finalists in category 2 were Hillarys Boat Harbour, Tin Can Bay Marina and Soldiers Point Marina.
Among the initiatives launched at the Marinas 2009 conference on the Gold Coast this week was the Gold Anchor Rating Scheme for Marinas, a concept that will be rolled out internationally over the next few years.
As Bransgrove explained: "The system is a consumer-focused rating scheme, much like the star-rating system for accommodation. It will involve an independent assessment of marina infrastructure, planning and service and will allow marinas to differentiate themselves in a competitive marketplace."
The international model will be administered by the MIAA, the peak body representing the marina industry of Australia and drawing members from marinas, yacht clubs, boat clubs, slips, boatyards, berthing, mooring and many other allied businesses.
"There will be 95 areas of a marina that will be assessed, providing a rating for the benefit of marina users and the marina itself."
An applicant's rating will be valid for three years, during which time a 'mystery audit' may be conducted to uphold the integrity of the scheme. Ratings are awarded at the level of 5, 4 ?, 4, 3 ?, and 3 Gold Anchors.
"Today, time is the most valuable commodity, and marina users seek to minimize the time engaged in marine related chores. The Gold Anchor Rating Scheme will assist their choices and provide detailed information on the facilities available."
