Officials of the UIM and WPPA have confirmed the deaths of driver Mohammad Al Mehairi,34 from the UAE and throttleman Jean-Marc Sanchez, 48 of France following a racing accident today at the 2009 Dubai Grand Prix, the final round of the Class 1 World Powerboat Championship.

The two offshore powerboat racers were racing Victory I in the the early stages of the Class 1 Dubai Grand Prix first race at the Dubai International Marine Club, when their boat flipped and landed upside down.

Safety personnel attended to both pilots at the scene. They were subsequently airlifted to a local hospital, where all efforts to resuscitate them were in vain.

The race was red flagged (called off) and as a mark of respect to both pilots and their families the event organisers have cancelled tomorrow's race and all event activities.

Al Mehairi was the European Class One champion in 2009, while Sanchez was part of the 2007 World Class One champion team. The Victory 1 team were eight points behind Fazza 3 for the 2009 World Championship and were hoping to overhaul their rivals with a victory on Saturday, although they had started the race second on pole
