Boating news from around the world

1:12 AM Wed 10 Jun 2009 GMT
Here we go again, another 'hot off the press' (well, sort of) edition of Powerboat-World.com's weekly newsletter.

All sorts of news this week, good and bad.

Certainly bad for Queensland water ski racer Mark Weaver, our #1 Formula 2 skier scheduled for the world titles in Belgium next month. Sadly, Weaver won't be there after taking a 180km/hr tumble resulting in a number of broken bones.

Boat fire on the Broadwater - .. .
Bad news, too, for a Gold Coast family when their boat caught fire and burnt to the waterline, but with a dash of good news attached when a smoke alarm had warned the family and all, including the pet dog, made it safely to shore.

Last Monday, June 8, by the way, was World Ocean's Day and it more or less passed everyone by without making a splash; next year, on the same day, Powerboat-Word and Sail-World intend to make some waves, because, let's face it, the health of our oceans dictates the health of our planet.

Here's a bit of interesting, but as yet unconfirmed news - Steve Ackerie, a former Australian Offshore Powerboat champion probably better-known as Australia's most flamboyant hair dressing tycoon, Stefan, is thinking of playing boats again. I'll be talking to the man later in the week and hope to dig out the full story.

In New Zealand, there's a 'bit of a stink' going on relating to private anchorages in park areas around the Hauraki Gulf. It's the sort of argument likely to spring up anywhere.

A passing thought - do you know how to spell 'Korea'? Yep, spot on K O R E A. Do Koreans know how to spell Australia?

Now you are wondering what I'm talking about. Take a look at our story on the Korean boat show and the stand hosted by the Australian International Marine Export Group (AIMEX). I think we can safely assume that AIMEX CEO Mary Anne Edwards, even though she's a Kiwi, can spell Australia and is not responsible for the signage.

Well, that was the week, that was. It was a short week due to Her Maj. QE II having a birthday - just to be different, let me say I love long weekends, but I hate short weeks! Trouble is I don't know how to keep one and eliminate the other. Any ideas?

Oh, forget, enjoy the read and make sure you drop by regularly for the updates.

And Happy Birthday for last Monday, Miss Lizzie.
