The exciting Formula 1 tunnel boats are set to make a dramatic return to the boat racing calendar with the formation of the 'Formula Powerboat Grand prix.'

Five classes will be included in the new organisation, already affiliated with the Australian Power Boat Association (APBA) and ready to conduct its first meeting at Taree in November.

The Formula Powerboat Grand Prix was formed after the previous Formula One Commission was disbanded earlier this year.

Its five classes will be Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3, Mono and Juniors.

Aim of the newly formed-body is to get competitors back on the water and racing.

It will operate under the current rules and regulations set out in the APBA rule book.

An executive committee has been elected and comprises Craig Truslove (President), Peter Evans (Vice President), Cherie Vella (Secretary) and Charmaine Howe (Treasurer).

Drivers' representatives selected include Anthony McEnnally (F1), David Wedlock (F2), Greg Adams (Mono) and Gary Osborne (Juniors), with an F3 representative yet to be chosen.

Peter Evans said the organisation was 'particularly excited' at the prospect of bringing junior racers on board.

'They are the future of our sport and can always be relied upon to present some close racing,' he said.

'Thirty-five drivers, most already financial members, have so far confirmed their interest in joining us and we intend to make every effort to encourage drivers past and present to become involved.

'Our current aim is to run six events in 2010 along the eastern seaboard, with venues in Queensland, NSW and Victoria,' he added.
