The 2012 range from Naish Kiteboarding

Naish KiteboardingNaish have totally revamped their product line for 2012, with a new board range including a wake skate, Alaia and a super fun surfboard called the Skate. With the sport of kiteboarding progressing in so many directions, the diverse range of kites and boards allows riders to choose their own style, in any wind condition possible.

One prime example, is the new; or very old  (depending on which way you look at it) - Alaia. Naish are the first to bring the finless strapless surfboards to the kiteboarding market, and it could prove to be a winner. Alaia's are all the rage at the moment, with the vintage look and surfing style becoming cool once again.

If you've never heard of an Alaia, they're very simple. It's a big wide, flat piece of Paulownia wood, shaped into a nose at the front, with no fins, no straps and no rocker. Amazingly, these modern interpretations of the original surfboards surf very well, and now - it's possible to kite on one too. The story behind the boards (as told by Naish) is: "When Captain Cook discovered Hawaii in the 18th century, he and his crew witnessed surfing for the first time. True to its roots, the Alaia takes it back to where surfing began in Hawaii."

This style of light wind riding could really take off, as the Alaia's are much easier to ride than a Skimboard, and can also be used to paddle into waves for those glassy days.
