St Kilda Kitesurfers - beware of construction
Kite Republic received asked to help out with keeping people out of the slipway at the RMYC.
The squadron are doing major repairs and have divers under the water and rigging/dredging etc under the water.
For the next couple of months kitesurfers MUST stay a couple of hundred metres away from St Kilda pier.
Following is some formal notification outlining exactly what is going on but the project managers for the squadron are a lot concerned about this
Email to John of Kite Republic:
Hi John,
Thanks for taking my call.
Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron is currently undertaking extensive slipway works near the St.Kilda Pier.
A Parks Victoria Notice of Mariners has been issued and a copy is attached.
We have sectioned off this area with special buoys and construction signage as a Construction Zone.
There are divers in the water and loads of underwater obstructions (300 x 150) hardwood bearers and cables at this time - making it very dangerous for all craft and kite surfers.
Despite this I am amazed at the kite surfers who still continue to enter this Construction Zone and pose for the tourists on the pier.
They exit over the slipway over the top of the underwater Construction Zone.
They are placing themsleves in extreme danger and if injured only have themselves to blame.
I know you are not responsible for the actions of all kitesurfers however we would appreciate putting the word out on this matter amongst Kitesurfers in the St.Kilda area in the spirit of co - operation and safety between water users.
I will drop some notices with Lance and your staff at the West Beach.
Thanks again for your help.
