Sail Melbourne to embrace a new era of Olympic Class Sailing

Kite Racing is coming to MelbourneMELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA: Sail Melbourne is excited to be hosting some of the world’s best kiteboarders as part of the ISAF Sailing World Cup from 2-8 December, 2012 at Sandringham Yacht Club.

Since entries opened in late August, Sail Melbourne has had a huge response with the kiteboarding fraternity, attracting competitors from Australia and around the world including Australian Kiteboarding Champion Jonathan Keys.

Kiteboarding’s inclusion in the ISAF Sailing World Cup circuit follows the announcement of the sport as part of the Olympic Sailing Competition for 2016 in Rio de Janeiro and beyond, marking a new era for sailing.

Both Men’s and Women’s kiteboarding events will be hosted on Port Phillip Bay off from Sandringham Yacht Club and will feature a course racing series followed by the medal race on the final day of racing.

The category of equipment for this year’s event will follow the IKA Class Rules 2012 and will be open to competitors of all ages and abilities, giving young up-and-coming kiteboarders the chance to compete against some of the best in the world.

The sport has had exceptional growth in Victoria since its inception, with Port Phillip Bay providing ideal wind conditions along a world class stretch of water, and Sail Melbourne looks forward to welcoming local and international kiteboarders to its shores to compete for the World Cup title.
