Ryan Parsons - the 42kg ripper from QLD (Interview)

You might have heard about Ryan Parsons after the last Australian Nationals down in Melbourne, Victoria. His actual weight was far outweighed by his skills on the water, especially considering he’s only been riding for a couple of years.

Like most 13 year old kids he’s aspiring to be the next Youri Zoon, Or Ruben Lenten, or Lewis Crathern. He doesn’t mind who’s place he takes, and at the rate he’s progressing, he might even join them at the top.

We caught up with him as he was pumping up his brand new Best GP at Brighton, QLD, to find out a little more about him!

So Ryan, tell us what you’re working on right now – what’s the latest move you’re doing?

So I'm practicing on most blind tricks and mobes but mostly putting grabs in the tricks I can already land to make it more technical.

And out of everything, what’s your favorite trick to perform?

Either looping big in high winds or s-bend with a grab.

What about the worst? Surely you’ve experienced some epic wipeouts over the past season! Tell us about your biggest crash.

I was riding at my local spot Brighton out the back doing backroll kiteloops in high winds on my 9m. The kite went lower then I wanted it to and started free falling from a good height. I didn't know what to do! By that time I hit the water and needed a lie down on the sand bank on the way in.

Your Dad kites too, who’s been kiting longer? You or him? And what is the best thing about kiting with your dad?

I started kiting about 3 to 4 months before dad, just because of safety reasons as I was only 12. But the best thing is just to have fun and help each other out with stuff. It`s also fun exploring different places around the area with dad.

Last season you went down to Melbourne for the Nationals, how did you find competing compared to freeriding? What kind of extra pressure was there, and how did you cope?

When I'm freeriding I can just go out and have fun and try all my new tricks when I feel like it. When I was at the nationals I was still having lots of fun but I had to wait for my heats, decide what gear I needed and be ready to compete at short notice. I found that every one was friendly and helped each other even though we were competing which helped me relax.

What’s the plan for this season, are you going anywhere awesome or working on some big tricks?

I'm not quite sure what I'll do this season but we'll probably go down south for some new places and to see old kiting friends but mostly just working on the tricks I need to practice at our local spots.

Thanks for the chat Ryan! You can go back to pumping now, have a great session!
