Kitesurfing race from Rottnest to the mainland this weekend

Witness some of the world's fastest men and women on water on Saturday 11 December race across Gage Roads at speeds in excess of 80km/h in the inaugural Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton Kitesurfing Race.

Come along and cheer in the 50 competing kitesurfers as they race into Leighton Beach and get involved in the festivities on offer. From 12pm onwards there will be a range of familyfriendly activities including free kitesurfing lessons, freestyle kiting demos and live DJs.

The Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton will start at Phillip Point Rottnest Island at 2.30pm and the fastest competitors are expected to arrive at Leighton Beach 30 to 40 minutes later.

A medal ceremony will be held on the beach at 4.30pm.

Competing in this year's event will be world speed record breaker, Frenchman Alex Caizergues, who this year broke the kite surfing speed record topping 100km/h.

Organisers hope 2010 will be the first of what will become an annual event on the international kitesurfing calendar.

The event is made possible with assistance from Fremantle Ports, Royal Life Saving WA and local kitesurfing body, Western Australia Kitesurfing Association (WAKSA).

Organisers recommend catching the train to Leighton beach to avoid parking hassles.
