Kiteboards made in Slovakia? They Must be Crazy...

Got wood?
That would be Crazyfly... The kiteboard company that's been around for years, not making a fuss or advertising up a storm. Just making really cool kiteboards...

You won't see any advertising campaigns that cost more than your house, nor will you see big name team riders splashing their logos across podiums and in their self promotion videos. But you WILL see Crazyfly kiteboards under kiters feet at your local. Simply because they've not only been around for ever, but they've always been ahead of the pack when it comes to board design and graphics.

This week Crazyfly takes us on a trip around their factory in Trencin, Slovakia. Where they put together all their kiteboards, bars and lines completely from scratch. Incredibly, even the bars are hand laid up carbon fibre, which are then pressed into a mould and drilled for the chicken loop. Anyone would think that's the stuff of mass producers! Same with the boards, everyone accuses everyone of copying, stealing and spying on each other. And sure, someone probably did copy someone else. But Crazyfly were one of the first companies to draw influences from snowboard construction with the ABS sidewalls and simple bottom shapes. So all kiteboards are pretty much the same nowadays... Who copied who? Who cares...

They also run their own CNC's, design their own graphics and research new designs from the group of little shipping containers (basically) in Slovakia. It's a nice change from the usual stories of mass production out of Thailand or Hong Kong. We've become so used to seeing the little 'Made in China' stickers on boards that we now expect all boards to be the same. Sure, they're not like Cardboards which are made in Australia, but it's a start!

Check out the factory, it's pretty impressive to see how these guys put a kiteboard together, lay the graphics and finish it all off.
