Kite Course racing at Safety Bay

Australian Kite Course RacingLast Saturday, 19th Feb, saw WAKSA's Course Racing successfully head south of the river to Rockingham. A total of 15 kiters made the trek down to Safety Bay Yacht Club (SBYC) for a exciting afternoon of racing. Many had not tried racing before, and even fewer had used a 'course board'. Thanks to Airborne Kitesurfing and WA Surf; everyone who attended was able to compete on these racing specific boards.

The move away from twin tips made the racing that little bit more exciting, with incredible upwind ability and speed off-the-wind, the racing was fast and furious (with spectacular crashes for the spectators watching from the comfort of the SBYC Clubhouse). The competitiveness improved dramatically throughout the day as people gained confidence and ability on these radical boards.

Although the course racing regulars of Damo Gough, Johnno Keys, Alty Frisby and Ned Taylor took the top spots everyone came away wanting more racing more often, even the SBYC Rescue Boat crew wanted more!

To meet this demand the intention is to run more introductory course racing events for people to come try racing on a course board and see what all the hype is all about. Stay tuned for further information.

Fastest times for the day:
1 Damo Gough 9:52
2 Ned Taylor 10:05
3 Johnno Keys 11:10
