How to do a Toeside Carving Turn on your kiteboard

We love big toeside carving turns here at Seabreeze.com.au. In fact some say; our logo is not actually a set of waves pitching in perfect unison, but the aftermath of a powerful slash on that ‘one last run’ before sunset. All we know, is that carving turns are one of the best feeling tricks in the sport of kiteboarding.

Because this trick is so cool, we thought we’d share 5 tips to performing the most powerful, bucket throwing carving turns of your life. Thank us later.

Five Tips to Toeside Carving Turns

Know your board
Make sure that you and your kiteboard are one and the same. Know the feeling when your fins are just about to break out and slide. Know just how far you can roll the board onto it’s rail before your heels scrape the water. Knowing all this means you can push the board as hard as possible through your toeside carving turn.

Quick step
Make the transition to toeside fast, get it over and done with. Keep the speed, make the switch and recover (read more about switching to toeside in last weeks ‘www.seabreeze.com.au/News/Kitesurfing/How-to-ride-toeside-on-your-kiteboard_8453891.aspx '>How to ride toeside on your kiteboard’.

Look your victim in the eye
Don’t take your eyes off that piece of water you’re going to smash, whether it’s a flat section of water, bay chop or a monster wave. Look well ahead and spot it, then keep your eyes on it through the switch to toeside, the carve and the explosion. Because after all, the best bit is watching what happens! (It also helps position your body).

Smooth is fast
You’ve heard it before, but this age old saying reigns true with toeside carving turns. You need to smoothly flick the kite in the new direction from around 10/2 o’clock. Smoothly roll from your toeside edge to your heelside and smoothly load up your rear foot to initiate the turn

Recover your speed
Nothing kills your vibe faster than sinking after a carving turn. So as you complete the turn, make sure you’re pointing a little downwind, your kite is powered and it’s still driving through the window.

The Short Version

1: Know when your board is going to slip out from under you.
2: Switch to toeside and keep your riding speed high.
3: Look at where you’ll be turning through the whole turn.
4: Keep it smooth. Smooth turns hold more power.
5: Recover by running downwind and driving the kite hard.

Follow these five tips to toeside carving turns, and you too will understand why kiteboarders all over the world can’t resist at least a couple every session.
