For Kiters who want to go a little higher - The Wingboard

Do you tire of being confined to the water? Does that brief glimpse of flight during a jump make you long for more? What if you could fly though the clouds, carving them up I not only left and right like we do now, but up and down too?

Sounds like the stuff you’d dream about after tasting one of uncle Haydens ‘special’ brownies. But no, this is real, it’s coming, and it’s called the ‘Wingboard’.

Picture a wakeboarding setup. Replace the boat with an aeroplane. Replace the wakeboard with a small glider wing. Done, that’s wingboarding, and if you’re not intrigued now, wait until you see the video of this guys 1/6th scale model.

Like all concept projects these days, funds are being raised through kickstarter. Their target is $32,000 which will pay for a 40% scale model to be constructed and tested to improve safety and consolidate the concept. Inventor of the idea, Aaron Wypyszynski describes what he envisions Wingboarding to be like:

“With the Wyp WingBoard, surfing the clouds is finally a reality. Whether it’s wakeboarding, gliding, skydiving, wing walking, or flying with a wingsuit, adventure enthusiasts continue to push the envelope. The WingBoard takes the thrill of these adventure sports to another dimension, combining the exhilaration of prolonged flight with the rush that comes when you’re in control.”

While they say they’re designing the Wingboard so any person can ride it, it’s not clear whether that person will be required to have skydiving licenses before riding the Wingboard. With a basic license costing a few grand to skydive solo, getting that ride on the Wingboard isn’t going to prove cheap, but hey, how cool would it be!!
