Bridge to Bridge Race won by Kiteboarders.. Again!

Kitesurfers dominate the Bridge To BridgeIt comes as no real surprise that yet again, kiteboarders have won the annual Bridge to Bridge race in San Francisco. Taking the title from windsurfers, 18 foot skiffs and even hydrofoiling super multi's.

Johnny Heineken, arguably the worlds fastest man in open water, actually beat the race record by over 2 minutes using one of the new Ozone Edge kites. Behind him were 6 other kiteboarders before an 18 foot skiff, a windsurfer and one more kite rounded out the top 10. It wasn't a great day for the conventional sails it seems, with their only chance being the hydrofoiling trimaran l'Hydroptere, which couldn't complete the race due to technical difficulties.

For the last few years, kites have swept the field in one of the most famous races in the world. Being one of the only real chances to race against all other forms of sailing craft, the Bridge to Bridge is always looked at as a measure of how technology in the sport has evolved, but if you asked anyone 5 years ago, none could have imagined how far (and fast) kiteboarding equipment would progress in such a short time.

With promising results like these, the fate of kiteboarding in the olympics all but a done deal. If we're the fastest things on water, then surely we deserve to compete for the ultimate trophy in sports. It's only a few weeks until the final verdict is delivered, then it's on for young on old.

Check out the video below of the race. The only kites are in the first half of the video because we're so fast. It's only a matter of time before the 18ft skiffs get lumped in the cruising division because they're so slow.
