FAD installation underway in New South Wales

Sydney anglers rejoice, the summer FAD season is about to get started.

Around twenty-five fish attracting devices are currently being installed in a range of locations along the New South Wales coastline including off Ballina, Evans Head, Wooli, Coffs Harbour, South West Rocks, Laurieton, Port Macquarie, Forster, Port Stephens, Swansea and Terrigal.

FADs are devices moored to the ocean floor which provide structure and therefore acts, as the name suggests, as an attractant to various bait and pelagic fish species.

The devices are medium sized yellow buoys marked with a cross and navigation light which are installed betwen six and thirty-two kilometres offshore within the zone of the East Australian Current from October to June each year.? The?program is funded by the Recreational Fishing Trust.

FADs are currently being installed along the coast with the last expected to be moored towards the end of December. To stay in touch with which FADs have been installed or to find their locations visit the NSW Department of Primary Industries website.
